Louis Dreyfus Armateurs selects equipment package from TTS for their second SOV
For their newbuild NB67 at Cemre Shipyard, Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) has selected a TTS Colibri™ crane together with a new walk-to-work gangway – the TTS Horizon™. The equipment package includes several industry firsts, all of which are central in TTS’ technology roadmap. The equipment package features a significant step forward, which is removal of the Operators Cabins. Instead, the crane and gangway will be controlled from Phoenix™, a remote operator environment that does not rely on a direct line of sight for the operator.-
– Phoenix™ is the first step in our roadmap towards autonomous operations for offshore vessels, says Mette Harv, Executive Vice President BU Energy at TTS Group. She adds, “Traditionally, the operator has been bound to sitting in a cabin mounted on or near the equipment. With Phoenix™ the operator can control the equipment in a far more accurate, efficient and safe manner. Phoenix™ can be located anywhere on the vessel and from the same chair; the operator can control the crane, gangway, cargo logistics system or any other complex deck machinery on-board. There are systems on the market than can control both crane and gangway from the vessel’s bridge, but Phoenix™ represents a paradigm shift in this market segment.”
The second Colibri™
The first Colibri™ was recently installed on-board LDA’s vessel “Wind of Change”, which is due to enter service in 2019. TTS and Ulstein announced their partnership on bringing the Colibri™ to market in May 2017, and just 13 months later, the first unit successfully passed its Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) with Class and Owner present.
– Seeing that the Colibri is functioning just as simulated in the HIL test is quite astonishing, said Nick Wessels, Marketing & Sales Manager at Ulstein, upon completion of the FAT. – Our engineers and the project team deserve a huge compliment for this great achievement, as they turned their vision into reality.
“Wind of Change” will enter service in 2019 and will operate in Borkum Riffgrund 1 & 2 and Gode Wind 1 & 2 wind fields off the coast of Germany.
First all-electric walk-to-work gangway, Horizon™
Almost 10 years after the first TTS motion compensated product was delivered, a new range of gangways has been launched. The Horizon™ range consists of five distinct models, all designed around the same all-electric architecture using proven technology configured in a novel way. Low weight, high performance and increased automation are the key design drivers and based on this “Innovation Norway”, the Norwegian Government’s most important instrument for innovation and development of enterprises and industry, has decided to support the development.
The Service Operations Vessel (SOV), designed by Salt Ship Design, will have a hybrid propulsion system using diesel generators and ABB’s OnBoard DC Grid™. The main drives for the gangway will be connected directly to the DC grid, and during operation, it will regenerate a considerable amount of energy that will be stored in the vessels battery array, which will cut fuel consumption and reduce emissions.

So, when TTS presented their all-electric gangway Horizon™, we saw the potential to integrate it in our newbuild in a simple and robust manner.
– The efficiency of logistics operations will get a boost from Phoenix™ as our operators can seamlessly change between using the gangway and the crane within a matter of seconds, says – If the systems work as well as the simulations and analysis show, a new standard for SOVs will be set in the market, he concludes.
Upon delivery in 2021, NB67 will enter into service of the offshore wind farm Hornsea Two, off the coast of England.
